Common questions

Is Chromium safe to download?

Chromium itself is Google's open-source browser project and is safe. The risk is where you download a compiled build from. Every build listed on this site links directly to the maintainer's own release page on GitHub or Google's storage, and each download is published with a SHA-256 checksum you can verify before running it.

What is the difference between Chromium and Chrome?

Chrome is Google's product built on top of Chromium. Chrome adds automatic updates, Widevine DRM, the proprietary H.264 and AAC codecs, crash reporting, and Google account integration. Chromium is the open-source core without those pieces, though many third-party builds add the codecs and Widevine back.

Which Chromium build should I download?

If you want something that behaves like Chrome with working sign-in and video, use Hibbiki's build. If you want no contact with Google at all, use ungoogled-chromium. If you want privacy but still need streaming video to work, use Marmaduke's ungoogled builds. If you want maximum speed on a modern CPU, use Thorium.

Does Chromium update itself?

No. Almost every Chromium build has no auto-updater, so you have to download and install new versions yourself. That is the single biggest practical difference from Chrome and the reason an outdated Chromium is a real security risk.
